  • Transition

Transition is a vital part of a child’s journey through primary school, supporting their emotional wellbeing, confidence and readiness to learn. Whether moving from home to school, between year groups, or on to secondary education, positive transition experiences help children feel safe, secure and prepared for change.

At Bishopswood we support our children by introducing new environments gradually, building relationships with staff and peers, and maintaining strong communication with families, to ensure that every child develops resilience and a sense of belonging.

We believe an effective transition programme not only reduces anxiety but also lays the foundation for continued success, allowing children to approach new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm.

Starting School (pre-school/nursery to Year R)

Starting school in Year R is a very special milestone for children and their families. It marks the beginning of an exciting journey full of new friendships, discoveries and happy experiences. At the same time, we understand that it can feel a little daunting for both children and parents, as everything is new and unfamiliar. Please be reassured that these mixed feelings are completely normal, and most children settle happily with time, patience and support.

At Bishopswood, our caring staff are here to help every child feel safe, confident and valued, taking things at a gentle pace and building strong relationships from the very start. As parents and carers, your support makes a huge difference, and together we will work closely to ensure your child feels secure, happy and ready to flourish in their new school environment.

Once places are confirmed, we begin by liaising with your child’s pre-school to learn more about their interests and needs, helping us to create well-balanced classes and ensure each child is supported from the very beginning. Throughout the summer term, we offer a range of opportunities for both children and parents to become familiar with the school, including a Welcome Meeting, story sessions, and informal events where you can meet staff, explore the classrooms and begin to build relationships.

Children are invited to attend several short visits in June and July, giving them the chance to get to know their new environment, teachers and classmates at a gentle pace. These sessions are carefully planned to help children grow in confidence, from staying with you initially to spending short periods in school independently. We also offer our “Bishopswood Buddies” sessions over the summer holidays, providing an additional opportunity for children to reconnect, strengthen friendships and feel even more secure before starting school. Alongside this, we carry out home visits at the start of September, which are a lovely way for staff to meet your child in a familiar setting and to talk with you about anything that will help us support them.

When children start school in September, we ease them into full-time attendance gradually over the first few days. This staggered approach helps them adjust to new routines, build confidence and feel comfortable in their new surroundings. We understand that starting school is a big step, and emotions can vary from excitement to nervousness—this is completely normal. Our experienced and caring team will work closely with you every step of the way to ensure your child feels safe, happy and ready to enjoy their learning journey at Bishopswood.

Transition from Year 2 to Year 3 (Infant to Junior)

As a Federation, we share many of the same approaches and practices and work together in close liaison. During the summer term, the Infant and Junior schools organise a programme of transition to ensure continuity and progression for the children who move to the Junior School in September.

We feel it is important that your child is confident and happy about the move to the Junior School and therefore we arrange the following transition activities to help build your child’s confidence and give them lots of opportunities to familiarise themselves with the school and teachers.

Whilst your child will already be familiar with many elements of school life at the juniors, like any transition, it can be a time of uncertainty and anxiety for both children and parents/carers. This year we have also created the document below to give information and guidance about how you as parents can support your child with the transition.

Moving onto Secondary School (Year 6 to 7)

Moving from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone - one we know will bring real change for all the children. Whilst it brings exciting new opportunities for learning and independence, it can also be a time of uncertainty and anxiety for both children and their parents.

Most children adapt well, though some may need a little more support along the way, and it's perfectly normal for feelings to shift from excitement to nerves and back again. As a parent or carer, there is much you can do to help your child to find their feet during this transition period. Our partnership of schools has produced the document below to help parents support their children during this time.
